Tea ceremony

The « way of the tea » is a traditional art form inspired in part by Zen Buddhism, in which powdered green tea (matcha) is prepared in a codified manner by an experienced practitioner and served to a small group of guests in a quiet setting.
Oka Sôli was born in Osaka and grew up in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan where the famous Urasenke tea school is located. Her great-grandfather was a tea ceremony teacher and her grandmother an Ikebana teacher. She started piano at the age of 5 and tea ceremony at the age of 18 and graduated from both. Learning the piano naturally gave her the appropriate gestures for the tea ceremony: suppleness, precision and elegance.

Japanese calligraphy

Traditional Japanese calligraphy – or Shodô 書道 (literally: the way of writing) – is of Chinese origin, and almost as old as the first writings in that part of the world. Transmitted to Japan at the same time as the alphabet from the continent, Japanese Shodô is based on the Chinese tradition but offers a subtly different aesthetic, imbued with the culture of the archipelago.
UEKI Suiju, or Midori, was born in 1992 in the southwest of Japan. Trained in traditional calligraphy since the age of four, she has never stopped wielding the brush. Recently trained by master Takeno’uchi Yûsui, Midori follows the path of writing as close as possible to the traditional canons but also by filling her lines with what she feels, an emotion, an atmosphere. Originally from Nagasaki and a graduate of French studies at the Tokyo University of Foreign Languages, the artist has already represented in her work the possible harmonious association between our culture and her own. Her works sometimes represent Chinese classics, Japanese cultural expressions, but always words appropriate to a situation.
